Novel Approaches to Combat Medical Device-Associated BioFilms

Xin Li et al.

Summary: Biofilms are formed by microorganisms as a protective survival state to resist antimicrobial agents and host immune responses. They pose a serious threat to human health, especially in medical device-associated infections, and traditional antimicrobial agents are ineffective. New treatment strategies are urgently needed to address biofilm infections.

Destruction of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms by combining an antibiotic with subtilisin A or calcium gluconate

JingJing Liu et al.

Summary: Non-antibiotic substances subtilisin A and calcium gluconate were found to significantly reduce the biomass of S. aureus biofilms, while antibiotics alone had limited effects. Combining antibiotics with calcium gluconate or subtilisin A led to an additive reduction of embedded biofilm bacteria in susceptible isolates. Further studies are needed to understand factors contributing to susceptibility to these combinations in specific isolates.

Staphylococcus aureus Biofilm: Morphology, Genetics, Pathogenesis and Treatment Strategies

Muhammad Idrees et al.

Summary: Staphylococcus aureus biofilm provides a protective environment for bacterial cells, leading to reduced effectiveness of antibacterial drugs and contributing to the rise of antimicrobial resistance. This increased resistance has resulted in higher morbidity and mortality rates globally, as well as significant financial losses to the global economy.
