Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) as a potential source of bioactive substances and their biological properties

Pilar Espitia-Hernandez et al.

Summary: Sorghum is the fifth most produced cereal in the world, known for its high yield and resistance to drought and heat. It contains a variety of antioxidants that have multiple health benefits. However, its use in the food industry is limited due to its low nutritional value and the presence of anti-nutritional factors.

Characterization of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] grains

Himani Punia et al.

Summary: Polyphenolic compounds in sorghum were characterized and quantified in five genotypes, showing that red and brown pericarp genotypes had higher antioxidant activities due to higher total proanthocyanidin and total phenolic content. Antioxidant activity was linearly related to polyphenols, suggesting potential for improving nutritional value and health properties in human food.

UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS characterization, antioxidant and antidiabetic properties of sorghum grains

Fred Kwame Ofosu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that brown sorghum grains contain phenolic compounds with antioxidant and antidiabetic properties, with some genotypes showing higher radical scavenging and enzyme inhibition activities, especially SOR 11, SOR 17 and SOR 33. Sorghum grains are also rich in various types of flavonoids, making them potential candidates for the development of functional foods.

Triacylglycerols compositions, soluble and bound phenolics of red sorghums, and their radical scavenging and anti-inflammatory activities

Ming Li et al.

Summary: There are differences in triacylglycerol profiles, phenolics, and antioxidant activities among commercial red sorghum varieties, with significant correlations observed. Most phenolic acids in red sorghums are in bound form, while soluble 3-deoxyanthocyanidins content is higher than bound forms regardless of variety. The stronger anti-inflammatory capacity of soluble phenolic fraction in Tong Za 117 is correlated with its higher TPC, TFC, and radical scavenging activity compared to its bound counterpart.

Role of food nutrients and supplementation in fighting against viral infections and boosting immunity: A review

Rohit Thirumdas et al.

Summary: Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in enhancing the immunity against viral infections, especially in the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic where there is a lack of proper curative viral drugs. Advocating for a diet rich in both macro and micro-nutrients is one of the few practical preventive measures available in fighting against Coronaviruses and other viruses in general.

Phenolic compounds: current industrial applications, limitations and future challenges

Bianca R. Albuquerque et al.

Summary: Phenolic compounds are natural bioactive molecules mainly found in plant tissues, with interesting bioactivities such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antiproliferative activities. Despite their potential applicability in various industries, there are still issues that need to be addressed, including improving bioavailability and stability through sustainable extraction and refinement technologies. This review focuses on recent advances in the applications of phenolic compounds in different technological and medicinal areas, as well as techniques to enhance their sustainable resourcing, stability, and bioavailability.
