Etiological Agents Implicated in Foodborne Illness World Wide

Summary: This mini review focuses on foodborne illnesses and outbreaks caused by food-producing animals, highlighting the importance of statistical information. Worldwide, there are 600 million cases of foodborne diseases and 420,000 deaths annually. Norovirus and Campylobacter are the main causes, with Listeria monocytogenes being the most fatal. In the United States, the number of foodborne diseases did not decrease between 1997 and 2017, while Europe sees more Campylobacter- and Salmonella-related cases.
