Early life migration and population discrimination of the small yellow croaker Larimichthys polyactis from the Yellow Sea: inferences from otolith Sr/Ca ratios

Dade Song et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the early migratory patterns of the small yellow croaker in the Yellow Sea using otolith Sr/Ca ratios, allowing for the discrimination of different populations. The findings suggest that the early migratory pattern of the species is from inshore to nearshore waters, and the traditional geographic boundaries separating the northern and southern Yellow Sea groups might be moving northward. This research provides important insights for the conservation and resource management strategies of the species.

Understanding patterns of distribution shifts and range expansion/contraction for small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) in the Yellow Sea

Qingpeng Han et al.

Summary: A spatio-temporal model was developed to analyze the distribution shifts of yellow croaker in the Yellow Sea, revealing a progressive disappearance of density hotspots in the north and southeast areas, with the biomass moving towards China. The exclusion of covariates in the model was unexpected, possibly due to limited environmental variations in winter and the comprehensive representation of spatial and spatio-temporal structure.

A Transient Hermaphroditic Stage in Early Male Gonadal Development in Little Yellow Croaker, Larimichthys polyactis

Qing-Ping Xie et al.

Summary: Our study identifies a novel form of transient hermaphroditism in little yellow croaker during early gonadal development, which is male-specific and distinct from related species. Further investigations reveal the absence of 11-ketotestosterone and elevated levels of 17-beta-estradiol in male intersex gonads, providing mechanistic insights into this unique phenomenon. This research contributes to a better understanding of fish reproductive biology and offers a useful model for studying the evolutionary relationship between hermaphroditism and gonochorism, as well as teleost sex determination and differentiation strategies.

Stock structure of Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) around the Korean Peninsula: an otolith microchemical perspective

Kali R. Stone et al.

Summary: By using otolith microchemistry, this study investigated the stock structure and migratory trends of Pacific cod around the Korean Peninsula, identifying two distinct stocks and supporting natal philopatry in the species. Analysis of elemental signatures revealed clear ontogenetic migration trends in the first 2 years of life.

The macroecology of fish migration

Dominique Alo et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of various environmental factors and historical factors on migratory life histories, revealing that different migratory strategies are unevenly distributed globally. Phylogeny plays a significant role in shaping current migration patterns, while productivity, temperature, environmental heterogeneity, and phylogenetic structure interact to influence richness in different ways for each strategy, particularly for anomalous anadromous fishes.
