Removal of polystyrene and polyethylene microplastics using PAC and FeCl3 coagulation: Performance and mechanism

Guanyu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal performance of PS and PE microplastics using PAC and FeCl3 coagulants. Results showed that PAC was more effective than FeCl3, especially in alkaline conditions. Adsorption and complexation were the main removal mechanisms, with the formation of new bonds enhancing the efficiency.

Elimination of Microplastics by Downstream Sand Filters in Wastewater Treatment

Sebastian Wolff et al.

Summary: The study investigated the removal of microplastic particles and fibers in the final treatment stage of wastewater treatment plants and found that municipal WWTPs were able to eliminate 99.2%-99.4% of microplastics, while a PVC manufacturer's sand filtration eliminated 99.2%-99.9% of microplastics.

Preliminary Screening for Microplastic Concentrations in the Surface Water of the Ob and Tom Rivers in Siberia, Russia

Yulia A. Frank et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the abundance and morphology of microplastics in the surface water of the Ob River and its large tributary, the Tom River, in western Siberia. The research found that the majority of recovered microplastic particles were less than 1 mm in size, with irregularly shaped microfragments being the most abundant type. These results provide valuable data on microplastic distribution in the Arctic Ocean via the Ob River system.

Microplastics in freshwater and wild fishes from Lijiang River in Guangxi, Southwest China

Lishan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics in the Lijiang River are dominated by large-sized flakes and fibers, present in both freshwater and wild fishes. The most abundant polymer types in freshwater were polypropylene-polyethylene copolymer and polyethylene, while polyethylene terephthalate dominated in wild fishes.

Evidence of microplastics in wetlands: Extraction and quantification in Freshwater and coastal ecosystems

Rakesh Kumar et al.

Summary: Microplastics are emerging non-degradable pollutants that impact humans and wildlife, especially aquatic species. Common shapes of microplastics observed in wetland ecosystems include fibers, fragments, filaments, foams, and microbeads. Research has identified high abundance of microplastics in wetlands and discussed advancements in extraction, characterization, and quantification techniques.
