The occurrence and distributions of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in groundwater after a PFAS leakage incident in 2018

Zhi Yuan Yong et al.

Summary: The study quantified PFAS concentrations in groundwater in three cities in the Nakdong River Basin in South Korea to investigate contamination and the impact of a PFAS leakage incident in 2018. The concentrations ranged from non-detectable to 36.9 ng/L, with common PFASs including PFOA, PFHxA, PFPeA, and PFHxS.

Recent US State and Federal Drinking Water Guidelines for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances

Gloria B. Post

Summary: PFAS are a class of synthetic chemicals that have been produced for over 70 years, with increasing concerns due to their widespread environmental presence, extreme persistence, bioaccumulative nature, and evidence for health effects from environmentally relevant exposures. Multiple US states have found the USEPA Health Advisories insufficiently protective and have developed more stringent guidelines for PFOA, PFOS, and other PFAS, with additional state guidelines expected to be released. The variations in state guidelines for PFAS reflect differences in toxicity and exposure considerations, with the range not unexpected given the different scientific approaches and historical context.

Sequestration and potential release of PFAS from spent engineered sorbents

Melanie Kah et al.

Summary: PFAS have contaminated land and water worldwide, requiring remediation through sorption. It is important that spent sorbents loaded with PFAS are disposed of properly to prevent release of contaminants. The sorption and desorption processes of PFAS on engineered sorbents are complex and influenced by various factors.

PFAS and their substitutes in groundwater: Occurrence, transformation and remediation

Bentuo Xu et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the occurrence, transformation, and remediation of PFAS in groundwater, highlighting high concentrations of substances like PFOA, PFBA, PFOS, and PFBS. Photocatalysis was identified as an ideal technology for PFAS removal, with the potential for combining with electrochemical or membrane filtration methods for enhanced efficacy.

Removal of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) in Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) Using Ion-Exchange and Nonionic Resins

Yida Fang et al.

Summary: In this study, adsorption of 75 PFASs in diluted AFFF mixture using different resins and GAC was investigated. The results showed that anion-exchange resins exhibited significant adsorption of PFASs compared to other resins and GAC, regardless of the PFAS charge. The study provides insights into the impact of resin properties on PFAS adsorption and guidelines for selecting resins to remove a wider range of PFASs.

Anion exchange resin removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from impacted water: A critical review

Treavor H. Boyer et al.

Summary: This paper critically reviews the available peer-reviewed literature on PFAS removal from water by anion exchange resin (AER), focusing on batch adsorption behavior, impact of water chemistry conditions, continuous-flow adsorption, adsorption modeling, regeneration, and weak-base AER. Future research priorities include improving the underlying science of PFAS-resin interactions, enhancing resin regeneration methods, and conducting comparative life cycle environmental and economic analyses for ion exchange treatment systems.

PFAS removal by ion exchange resins: A review

Fuhar Dixit et al.

Summary: Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large family of anthropogenic organic compounds with a wide range of industrial and commercial applications, and have raised global concerns due to their toxicity and bio-accumulative properties. The ion exchange (IX) process has been found to be an efficient technology for the remediation of PFAS-laden surface, ground and effluent wastewaters.

Biochar Water Treatment for Control of Organic Micropollutants with Ultraviolet A Surrogate Monitoring

Joshua Kearns et al.

Summary: Biochar adsorbent shows great potential for water treatment, especially in settings where granular activated carbon is not feasible. Using dissolved organic matter (DOM) as a surrogate parameter for monitoring biochar adsorber bed life is a key focus of current research.
