Postmortem Brain-Blood Ratios of Codeine, Fentanyl, Oxycodone and Tramadol

Michael Nedahl et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations and brain-blood ratios of four analgesics in brain and blood samples from 210 autopsy cases. The results show significant differences in brain tissue concentration compared to blood concentration for these analgesics, providing valuable information for toxicological investigations in cases where these drugs are suspected to have played a role in fatal intoxication.

Energy substrate metabolism and mitochondrial oxidative stress in cardiac ischemia/reperfusion injury

Maija Dambrova et al.

Summary: The heart is highly flexible in its metabolism and mitochondria play a crucial role in oxidative phosphorylation and heart function. ROS production pathways during ischemia/reperfusion involve glucose, fatty acids, and the Krebs cycle, with strategies available to modulate substrate accumulation for ROS production mitigation.

Post-Mortem Metabolomics: A Novel Approach in Clinical Biomarker Discovery and a Potential Tool in Death Investigations

Albert Elmsjo et al.

Summary: In this study, post-mortem metabolomics was used to identify biomarkers associated with pneumonia, showing clear group separation between pneumonia cases and control cases. The identified metabolites belonged to various biological classes and correlated well with clinical manifestations of pneumonia. The study demonstrated the robustness and usability of post-mortem metabolomics in death investigations.
