Recent advancement in scaling-up applications of microbial fuel cells: From reality to practicability

Dipak A. Jadhav et al.

Summary: Current applications of microbial fuel cells (MFC) are limited to laboratory scale for wastewater treatment and energy recovery, and scaling-up is constrained by interactions between microbes and electrodes, design aspects, electrochemical limitations, and a multidisciplinary approach. To transform bench-top MFC models to field applications, scaling-up can be achieved by enlarging electrodes and stacking modular units, while addressing issues such as maintaining energy harvesting rate and voltage reversal. Demonstration of field applications like Pee-Power MFC and Bioelectric toilet are key indicators of successful implementation of MFC technology, which is advancing as a sustainable competent technology for wastewater treatment and energy recovery.

MnO2/reduced graphene oxide nanohybrids as a cathode catalyst for the microbial reduction of CO2 to acetate and isobutyric acid

Dayakar Thatikayala et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel electrode made of nanowires interconnected with MnO2/rGO nanohybrids was developed to enhance the conversion of CO2 to value-added products. The modified cathode catalyst showed increased CO2 absorption capacity, reduced electron transfer resistance, enhanced product yields, and improved columbic efficiency. This suggests the potential of using nanostructured MnO2/rGO nanohybrids as catalysts to enhance CO2 electro-reduction for high-value VFAs production in MES systems, which could be further developed for carbon capture and utilization technology.

Paper-based diagnostic platforms and devices

Mihaela Puiu et al.

Summary: Paper-based analytical devices have become essential components in point-of-care applications, especially when used in conjunction with microfluidic platforms. Paper-based electrochemical devices (PEDs) are preferred for lab-on-a-chip biosensors due to their simplicity, affordability, portability, and disposability. Despite their low costs and simplicity, PEDs face the challenge of meeting various criteria to be affordable, sensitive, specific, user-friendly, rapid, equipment-free, and deliverable to end users.
