Melanin and chromoblastomycosis agents: Characterization, functions, and relation with antifungals

Alessandra Koehler et al.

Summary: Melanins are a diverse group of dark pigments with similar properties, with the dihydroxynaphtalene (DHN)-melanin being the most studied in fungi. It has important structural and antioxidant functions, acting as a protective factor against the host's immune system, and can interact with main antifungals, reducing their activity and the susceptibility of fungi. Further research is needed to understand its importance in fungal pathogenicity and virulence.
