Analysis of the occurrence and molecular characteristics of drug-resistant strains of Enterococcus faecalis isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of insectivorous bat species in Poland: A possible essential impact on the spread of drug resistance?

Aneta Nowakiewicz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate multidrug-resistant Enterococcus strains isolated from bats in Poland. The findings showed that a significant percentage of the isolates exhibited multi-drug resistance, with resistance to tetracycline, erythromycin, and rifampicin being the most common combination. Additionally, a high proportion of strains showed high-level aminoglycoside resistance. It was also observed that certain resistance genes were frequently detected together in the same strain, indicating potential common occurrence on mobile genetic elements.

Urinary shedding of leptospires in palearctic bats

Veronika Seidlova et al.

Summary: This study identified the presence of pathogenic Leptospira in bats from Czech Republic, Poland, Republic of Armenia, and Altai Region of Russia. The findings suggest a potential public health concern and highlight the importance of monitoring and raising awareness about the risk of leptospirosis in bat populations. Non-invasive urine sampling for molecular detection of Leptospira spp. is recommended as a suitable surveillance strategy.

Recovery of Mycobacteria from Heavily Contaminated Environmental Matrices

Vit Ulmann et al.

Summary: The decontamination method utilizing a solution containing NaOH and TDAB proved to be effective in processing heavily microbially contaminated matrices, resulting in low contamination rates across various environmental samples. A diverse range of mycobacteria species were isolated, with PCR detection parameters significantly improved by pre-treating the sample suspension with PMA solution. This method allows for more accurate assessment of human exposure risks to live non-tuberculous mycobacteria.

Decontamination Strategies Used for AFB Culture Significantly Reduce the Viability of Mycobacterium abscessus Complex in Sputum Samples from Patients with Cystic Fibrosis

Dominic Stephenson et al.

Summary: Among six different decontamination strategies, treatment with NALC-NaOH resulted in an average reduction in colony count of 87% for MABSC, while 4% NaOH caused a 98.3% average reduction. All treatments including NaOH showed significantly lower colony counts compared to direct culture. The viability of MAC was less affected by most decontamination treatments.
