Evaluation of a new culture medium for isolation of nontuberculous mycobacteria from environmental water samples

Kimberly J. Alexander et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of highly selective Rapidly Growing Mycobacteria (RGM) medium for culturing non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) from environmental water samples, and found that direct culturing on RGM medium provided sensitivity comparable to that of acid-pre-treated 7H10 and 7H11 medium, with significantly less overgrowth and interference from other organisms on RGM medium.

Characterization of oral swab samples for diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis

Rachel C. Wood et al.

Summary: Oral swab analysis (OSA) can detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) DNA in TB patients, with FLOQSwabs collecting more biomass and showing higher sensitivity. There was no reduction in bacterial biomass during repeated tongue samplings, indicating a potential for further development of this TB screening method.

Decontamination Strategies Used for AFB Culture Significantly Reduce the Viability of Mycobacterium abscessus Complex in Sputum Samples from Patients with Cystic Fibrosis

Dominic Stephenson et al.

Summary: Among six different decontamination strategies, treatment with NALC-NaOH resulted in an average reduction in colony count of 87% for MABSC, while 4% NaOH caused a 98.3% average reduction. All treatments including NaOH showed significantly lower colony counts compared to direct culture. The viability of MAC was less affected by most decontamination treatments.

Investigation of Potential Reservoirs of Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria in a European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Farm

Davide Mugetti et al.

Summary: Fish mycobacteriosis, caused by NTM with species like Mycobacterium marinum being common, poses a global problem without effective therapy or vaccine currently available. Environmental samples from fish, sediment, and periphyton in a European sea bass farm tested positive for M. marinum, while newly added fish batches and water samples tested negative. The challenges in managing these diseases lie in the environmental resistance of NTM and the lack of prophylactic and therapeutic strategies, emphasizing the importance of prompt identification of reservoirs and good zootechnical hygiene practices.
