Safety, Tolerability, and Immunogenicity of a 20-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV20) in Adults 60 to 64 Years of Age

Donald Hurley et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of a 20-valent PCV in adults aged 60 to 64 without prior pneumococcal vaccination. Results showed that PCV20 was well tolerated and elicited robust immune responses against all serotypes in this age group, demonstrating its potential to expand pneumococcal disease protection.

Similar impact and replacement disease after pneumococcal conjugate vaccine introduction in hospitalised children with invasive pneumococcal disease in Europe and North America

Arto A. Palmu et al.

Summary: A study showed that there was a significant decline in childhood invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in the US after the introduction of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7), with a greater reduction in outpatient IPD compared to hospitalized IPD. In the US, the proportion of hospitalized IPD cases also increased with the introduction of PCV.

A randomized phase 1 study of the safety and immunogenicity of 2 novel pneumococcal conjugate vaccines in healthy Japanese adults in the United States

David Fitz-Patrick et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of a 20-valent PCV and a complementary 7-valent PCV in healthy Japanese adults. Results showed robust immune responses in both PCV20 and cPCV7 groups at 1 month post-vaccination, with mild to moderate local and systemic reactions.

Impact of Biological Therapies on the Immune Response after Pneumococcal Vaccination in Patients with Autoimmune Inflammatory Diseases

Patricia Richi et al.

Summary: Patients with different autoimmune inflammatory diseases on biological therapy are at risk of pneumococcal disease. The study showed that a protocol combining PCV13 and PPV23 vaccines can help achieve functional antibodies against pneumococcal serotypes. Among the different biological therapies used, etanercept was associated with achieving higher OPKA titers, while rituximab did not lead to a worse immune response compared to other agents.

Pneumococcal vaccination in adults at very high risk or with established cardiovascular disease: systematic review and meta-analysis

Miguel Marques Antunes et al.

Summary: Pneumococcal vaccination was associated with a 22% decrease in all-cause mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease or at a very high cardiovascular risk. However, limitations in study design and serious risk of bias in some included studies lead to decreased confidence in the results.

Cost-effectiveness of pneumococcal vaccines among adults over 50 years old in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review

Yixue Shao et al.

Summary: This systematic review summarizes economic evaluations of pneumococcal vaccines for adults aged 50 years or older in LMICs, showing that both PPSV23 and PCV13 are economically favorable and cost-effective compared to no vaccination. However, there are different findings when comparing the two vaccines, and there are concerns about potential bias and the impact of indirect protection in the studies.
