Bilirubin: The yellow hormone?

Libor Vitek et al.

Summary: Bilirubin plays an important role in regulating various biological functions in the human body, including cell signaling, metabolism modulation, and immune regulation. Individuals with chronic mild unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia typically have a lower incidence of civilization diseases, while higher serum concentrations of unconjugated bilirubin may serve as a protective factor against these diseases.

Association of Serum Bilirubin Level with Metabolic Syndrome and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study of 1672 Obese Children

Cristina Bellarosa et al.

Summary: Obesity plays a central role in the development of metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in children, with serum bilirubin concentrations showing an inverse association with certain components of metabolic syndrome. However, bilirubin does not appear to be protective against metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in severe obesity.
