Dietary Polyphenols in Metabolic and Neurodegenerative Diseases: Molecular Targets in Autophagy and Biological Effects

Ana Garcia-Aguilar et al.

Summary: Polyphenols are secondary metabolites of plants that regulate various biological processes, offering protection against inflammation, oxidative stress, and related injuries. They promote autophagy, enhance mitochondrial function and antioxidant defenses, reduce oxidative stress, and decrease cell apoptosis, potentially explaining their health-promoting properties.

Variation of Essential Oil Content and Composition, Phenolics, and Yield Related Traits Using Different Pollination Systems in Populations of Thymus Species

Faranak Khanahmadi et al.

Summary: The production of self-pollinated plants could be important for improving secondary metabolites in medicinal plants, with inbreeding leading to positive effects in certain traits. Different Thymus populations showed varying characteristics in terms of total phenolic content and essential oil components under self-pollination and open pollination conditions.

Hazard of Contamination with Heavy Metals in Thymus serpyllum L. Herbs from Rural Areas

Anna Figas et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the contents of Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, and Pb in the soil and organs of wild Thymus serpyllum L. in three natural habitats in Poland. It found high Pb content in the soil at two locations and Pb content in plant tissues at one location exceeding WHO's tolerable levels. Only plants from the relatively younger vegetation met the conditions for herbal therapy with Zn content above 50 mg kg(-1) in plants from the other two locations, indicating a need for monitoring and regulating plant collection in natural habitats.
