Efficacy of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors in Alzheimer's disease

Gabriella Marucci et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is characterized by cognitive decline and behavioral manifestations, with the most common treatment being cholinesterase inhibitors. Despite their limited efficacy and gastrointestinal side effects, ChE-Is remain a pharmacotherapeutic resource for AD treatment. Investigating combinations with other drug classes may offer renewed interest in the use of ChE-Is for adult-onset dementia disorders.

Fruit, vegetables, and mushrooms for the preparation of extracts with α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition properties: A review

Konstantinos Papoutsis et al.

Summary: This study reviews the recent evidence on the in vitro inhibition activities of α-amylase and α-glucosidase by extracts derived from selected fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms. Various compounds have been shown to exhibit inhibitory effects on these enzymes, and parameters such as harvesting period, maturity stage, sample preparation, extraction technique, and solvent type can affect the inhibition activities of the extracts.

Emerging roles of oxidative stress in brain aging and Alzheimer's disease

Andra Ionescu-Tucker et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are metabolic byproducts that can be toxic at high levels and have been linked to cognitive aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Therapeutics like antioxidants, caloric restriction, and physical activity can reduce oxidation and prevent cognitive decline in brain aging and AD. Long term physical activity shows promise in improving cognitive health by reducing ROS levels and promoting optimal function.

LC-MS/MS Screening of Phenolic Compounds in Wild and Cultivated Grapes Vitis amurensis Rupr.

Mayya Razgonova et al.

Summary: A comparative metabolomic study was conducted on wild grapes from different locations in the Primorsky and Khabarovsk territories, as well as grapes from the collection of the N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources, using liquid chromatography and ion trap mass spectrometry. The ethanolic extracts of V. amurensis grapes contained 118 compounds, with several new metabolites identified. Samples of V. amurensis grapes collected near Vyazemsky and the Arsenyevka River showed the highest diversity of phenolic compounds compared to other wild samples and cultural grapes.
