A Biostimulant Based on Seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum and Laminaria digitata) and Yeast Extracts Mitigates Water Stress Effects on Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.)

Cristina Campobenedetto et al.

Summary: The use of the biostimulant ERANTHIS, based on seaweed and yeast extracts, was tested on tomato plants grown under mild water-stress conditions, showing lower stress-related substances and ROS scavenger enzyme activity, as well as higher stem water potential and photosynthetic pigment levels compared to untreated plants. These results suggest that ERANTHIS may mitigate water stress effects on tomato plants.

Reduction of oxidative stress and ornithine decarboxylase expression in a human prostate cancer cell line PC-3 by a combined treatment with α-tocopherol and naringenin

Piera Torricelli et al.

Summary: The combined treatment of NG and α-TOC alleviated oxidative stress and reduced cell proliferation in PC-3 cancer cells. Additionally, this treatment also decreased polyamine levels, potentially modulating the role of polyamines in cell differentiation, making α-TOC a potential drug for differentiation therapy in prostate cancer.

Carla Gentile et al.

Summary: This study compared the food quality, nutritional composition, and nutraceutical values of different varieties of cherimoya. Fino de Jete was found to be the best in terms of commercial attributes and nutritional composition, while Chaffey and Daniela had the highest content of polyphenols and proanthocyanidins. Torre1 and Torre2 showed a balanced nutritional profile.

Metal load and oxidative stress driven by organotin compounds on rainbow trout

Gabriele Magara et al.

Summary: The study observed stress responses in rainbow trout liver after receiving injections of tributyltin compounds, indicating different stress mechanisms caused by TBTC and TBTE. The findings suggest an ecotoxicological risk for freshwater ecosystems due to the weak induction of metal-trapping metallothioneins and changes in oxidative stress biomarkers in TBT-treated trout.

First insights into oxidative stress and theoretical environmental risk of Bronopol and Detarox® AP, two biocides claimed to be ecofriendly for a sustainable aquaculture

Gabriele Magara et al.

Summary: Bronopol and Detarox (R) AP are broad-spectrum antimicrobial biocides that have shown effectiveness against aquatic pathogens, but their toxicity on species and environmental risks are still under research. This study evaluated the acute and sublethal toxicity of these biocides on Sinanodonta woodiana, showing that both exert slight oxidative pressure on the freshwater bivalve. Theoretical environmental risk assessment suggested a lower risk with Detarox (R) AP compared to Bronopol, indicating greater ecological sustainability.

Antiparasitic and Antibacterial Functionality of Essential Oils: An Alternative Approach for Sustainable Aquaculture

Mahmoud A. O. Dawood et al.

Summary: The use of synthetic antibiotics and chemicals in aquaculture poses threats to sustainability due to the development of drug-resistant pathogens and residual antibiotic impacts. Herbal products and essential oils offer alternative approaches to combat microbial and parasitic diseases, with EOs showing effectiveness against fish parasites and pathogenic bacteria through mechanisms that need further research. This review explores the potential of EOs as an environmentally friendly phytotherapeutic in aquaculture, highlighting gaps in current research and suggesting future approaches for sustainable practice.

Protective Effects of Sal B on Oxidative Stress-Induced Aging by Regulating the Keap1/Nrf2 Signaling Pathway in Zebrafish

Erzhuo Li et al.

Summary: Oxidative damage-induced aging models were established by treating zebrafish embryos with ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and 6-hydroxydopamine in this study. Salvianolic acid B was found to protect against aging by regulating the Keap1/Nrf2 pathway and antioxidative genes/enzyme activity.
