Comparative Study of the Antimicrobial Activity of Selenium Nanoparticles With Different Surface Chemistry and Structure

Nenad Filipovic et al.

Summary: Three types of selenium nanoparticles were synthesized using different stabilizers and reducing agents, and their effects on the antimicrobial activity against several common bacterial strains were evaluated. It was found that selenium nanoparticles obtained under different synthesis conditions exhibited varying antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity. The SeNPs-BSA formulation showed significantly lower cytotoxicity compared to the other two formulations.

Varied-shaped gold nanoparticles with nanogram killing efficiency as potential antimicrobial surface coatings for the medical devices

Ewelina Piktel et al.

Summary: The study synthesized a series of varied-morphology gold nanoparticles with potent antibacterial activity against a spectrum of clinical strains, including Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and uropathogenic Escherichia coli. The optimized synthesis of gold nanoparticles allowed for the development of nanomaterials significantly more potent than previous formulations, with antimicrobial spectrum covering strains with different drug resistance mechanisms. The research highlights the potential for using non-spherical gold nanoparticles as new coatings targeting multidrug-resistant pathogens causing device-associated infections.

Nanostructured Zirconium-Oxide Bioceramic Coatings Derived from the Anodized Al/Zr Metal Layers

Zdenka Fohlerova et al.

Summary: The zirconium-oxide ceramic coatings, consisting of arrays of 3D nanostructures with different shapes and sizes, showed no cytotoxicity to living cells. Among the nanostructures, nanopillars displayed the best cell viability and proliferation rates, while promoting well-defined organization of actin filaments and mature focal adhesions. The differences, paradoxes, and regularities in cell responses were attributed to the coating morphologies, surface chemistries, and processes at the cell/surface interfaces.
