High-throughput 96-well bioelectrochemical platform for screening of electroactive microbial consortia

L. Szydlowski et al.

Summary: The study compared the electroactive capabilities of microbial communities from four mine drainages using a newly designed 96-well-plate array of microbial fuel cells. It demonstrated that the 96-well MFC array is a suitable platform for high-throughput screening, selection, and enrichment of electroactive consortia. Environmental conditions and physical and chemical parameters were found to be crucial for developing an efficient electroactive community.

Electrolocation? The evidence for redox-mediated taxis in Shewanella oneidensis

Ruth Starwalt-Lee et al.

Summary: Shewanella oneidensis is a dissimilatory metal reducing bacterium that shows tactic migration to insoluble electron acceptors for extracellular electron transfer. The interplay between its taxis pathways and EET is not yet understood, making investigation into taxis phenomena necessary. Further research is needed to explore the proposed models of EET taxis and key areas in need of investigation.

A chip-based 128-channel potentiostat for high-throughput studies of bioelectrochemical systems: Optimal electrode potentials for anodic biofilms

Tom R. Molderez et al.

Summary: Research on microorganisms performing extracellular electron transfer using a 128-channel potentiostat connected to a 128 gold electrode array shows that electrode potential can impact the growth and electrochemical characteristics of anodic electroactive biofilms. However, the mechanism of heterogeneous electron transfer is not significantly affected by electrode potential. The high-throughput and high reproducibility provided by the array may have a major facilitating impact on the field of electromicrobiology, with key aspects for improvement being data processing algorithms and manufacturing of the electrode array itself.

Survival of the first rather than the fittest in a Shewanella electrode biofilm

Eric D. Kees et al.

Summary: The study found that in surface-attached microbial communities, the first bacterial species to colonize a surface would persist and would not be excluded by faster growing competitors, making competitive exclusion less common. This research provides insights into natural selection dynamics in sessile microbial communities and offers a framework for designing stable microbial communities for various applications.
