Synaptic Release Potentiation at Aging Auditory Ribbon Synapses

Thibault Peineau et al.

Summary: Age-related hidden hearing loss is often caused by a progressive degeneration of inner hair cell (IHC) ribbon synapses. This study found that a decrease in synapse number may lead to hearing loss and potentially cause hyperacusis. Synaptic transmission at surviving synapses was found to be functionally potentiated, partially compensating for the decrease in synapse number.

Oxidative Stress and Inflammation Caused by Cisplatin Ototoxicity

Vickram Ramkumar et al.

Summary: Hearing loss can result from exogenous insults that generate oxidative stress and inflammation, with cisplatin ototoxicity being one major cause. The mechanisms associated with cisplatin-induced hearing loss, including pathways for cisplatin entry and toxic pathways activated by cisplatin, have been discussed. Protective G-protein coupled receptors and heat shock proteins in the cochlea may offer potential avenues for prevention and treatment.
