MAR1 links membrane adhesion to membrane merger during cell-cell fusion in Chlamydomonas

Jennifer F. Pinello et al.

Summary: A key membrane protein MAR1 in fertilization of green alga Chlamydomonas provides a molecular link between membrane adhesion and bilayer merger. MAR1 pairs with another receptor and shares similar ectodomain architecture with a conserved sperm adhesion protein in plant lineages.

Evolution of the mating type gene pair and multiple sexes in Tetrahymena

Guanxiong Yan et al.

Summary: The multiple mating type system of the Ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila is a self/non-self recognition system with specific MTA and MTB genes, believed to be derived from a common ancestral gene and to have co-evolved for at least 150 million years. Varying conditions of reproductive stress may lead to evolutionary co-adaptations of MTA and MTB genes and changes in mating type determination mechanisms.

Small RNA-directed DNA elimination: the molecular mechanism and its potential for genome editing

Carolien Bastiaanssen et al.

Summary: Tetrahymena uniquely deals with transposable elements by having separate somatic and germline genomes in a single cell. During sexual reproduction, a small RNA directed system compares the two genomes to identify and process transposable elements. The chromatin context in Tetrahymena allows for potential advantages in genome editing and gene therapy compared to the CRISPR-Cas9 system.

Were eukaryotes made by sex? Sex might have been vital for merging endosymbiont and host genomes giving rise to eukaryotes

Michael Brandeis

Summary: I hypothesize that the appearance of sex facilitated the merging of endosymbiont and host genomes during early eukaryote evolution, which was vital for the evolution of genuine eukaryotes. This process required a novel mechanism, which I suggest might have been meiotic sex.

Progression of asexual to sexual stages of Cystoisospora suis in a host cell-free environment as a model for Coccidia

Anna Sophia Feix et al.

Summary: Coccidia, including Cystoisospora suis, exhibit a characteristic life cycle involving a switch between asexual and sexual development. A novel host cell-free cultivation method allows for the completion of the C. suis life cycle in vitro, providing a new tool for detailed research and potential evaluation of drug or vaccine targets.

Species-specific gamete recognition initiates fusion-driving trimer formation by conserved fusogen HAP2

Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: Recognition and fusion between gametes during fertilization is an ancient process. Protein HAP2, a structural homolog of viral class II fusion proteins, undergoes an obligate conformational rearrangement on minus gametes for successful fusion in Chlamydomonas. This rearrangement is triggered only by species-specific adhesion between the two gamete membranes.

Switching it up: algal insights into sexual transitions

Susana M. Coelho et al.

Summary: Although the process of meiosis is highly conserved across eukaryotes, the transitions between sexual systems have profound evolutionary and ecological consequences for plants. Research suggests that brown and green algae may serve as interesting comparative models to enhance our understanding of plant reproductive biology processes, such as gamete dimorphism, gametogenesis, sex determination, and transitions in sex-determining systems.
