Melatonin attenuates diabetic cardiomyopathy and reduces myocardial vulnerability to ischemia-reperfusion injury by improving mitochondrial quality control: Role of SIRT6

Li-Ming Yu et al.

Summary: Targeting mitochondrial quality control with melatonin shows promise in attenuating diabetic cardiomyopathy. Activation of SIRT6 and melatonin membrane receptors exerts cardioprotective effects, playing a key role in preserving mitochondrial quality control. Long-term melatonin treatment may be a promising strategy for diabetic patients in reducing myocardial vulnerability to ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Targeting FSTL1 for Multiple Fibrotic and Systemic Autoimmune Diseases

Xiaohe Li et al.

Summary: The study showed that FSTL1 nAbs exerted potent antifibrotic effects by reducing TGF-β1 responsiveness, myofibroblast activation, and extracellular matrix production. These antibodies also reduced the severity of collagen-induced arthritis in mice and inflammatory responses in vitro.

Matricellular Protein Cilp1 Promotes Myocardial Fibrosis in Response to Myocardial Infarction

Qing-Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed a pathological role of Cilp1 in promoting post-myocardial infarction cardiac remodeling and identified a novel function of Cilp1 in promoting myofibroblast proliferation. Cilp1 may serve as a potential biomarker for pathological cardiac remodeling and a target for fibrotic heart disease.

Dynamic resistance exercise increases skeletal muscle-derived FSTL1 inducing cardiac angiogenesis via DIP2A-Smad2/3 in rats following myocardial infarction

Yue Xi et al.

Summary: The study found that dynamic resistance exercise can stimulate skeletal muscle to produce FSTL1 protein, promoting myocardial angiogenesis, inhibiting pathological remodeling, and protecting cardiac function. Exogenous FSTL1 can promote endothelial cell proliferation and regulate angiogenesis through the DIP2A-Smad2/3 signaling pathway.

Cardiac fibrosis

Nikolaos G. Frangogiannis

Summary: Myocardial fibrosis, characterized by the expansion of cardiac interstitium through deposition of extracellular matrix proteins, is a common pathophysiologic feature in various myocardial conditions. Activated fibroblasts and myofibroblasts play a central role in cardiac fibrosis, producing matrix proteins and triggering fibrogenic signalling cascades in response to stress. Immune cells, vascular cells, and cardiomyocytes can also contribute to fibrosis, while fibrotic changes may disrupt cardiac function and play a role in arrhythmogenesis.
