Senescence in Post-Mitotic Cells: A Driver of Aging?

Thomas von Zglinicki et al.

Summary: Cell senescence is not limited to proliferating cells, but can also occur in non-dividing cells. Different senescence domains interact with each other and may play a significant role in mammalian aging.

Activated Protein Phosphatase 2A Disrupts Nutrient Sensing Balance Between Mechanistic Target of Rapamycin Complex 1 and Adenosine Monophosphate-Activated Protein Kinase, Causing Sarcopenia in Alcohol-associated Liver Disease

Gangarao Davuluri et al.

Summary: Despite the high clinical significance of sarcopenia in alcohol-associated cirrhosis, the mechanisms of ethanol-induced impaired protein homeostasis are poorly understood. This study identified PP2A as a key mediator in ethanol-induced dysregulation of protein balance, suggesting potential therapeutic approaches targeting the PI3K gamma-PP2A axis.

Compound Sarcopenia in Hospitalized Patients with Cirrhosis Worsens Outcomes with Increasing Age

Nicole Welch et al.

Summary: The study found that older patients with cirrhosis are more likely to experience muscle loss, which is associated with higher mortality, longer length of stay, and increased cost of hospitalization. The clinical outcomes of younger patients with cirrhosis are similar to those of older patients with cirrhosis, suggesting accelerated aging in cirrhosis. Compound sarcopenia in older patients with cirrhosis is associated with higher inpatient mortality, increased length of stay, and cost of hospitalization compared to general medical patients with sarcopenia.

Integrated multiomics analysis identifies molecular landscape perturbations during hyperammonemia in skeletal muscle and myotubes

Nicole Welch et al.

Summary: This study utilized a multiomics approach to analyze molecular changes during hyperammonemia in muscle tissues, revealing various types of responses including mitochondrial and oxidative dysfunction, disruption of protein homeostasis, and activation of oxidative stress pathways. Additionally, novel observations were made, such as an increase in expression of antiapoptotic proteins, increased calcium flux, and increased protein glycosylation during hyperammonemia. The data demonstrate complex molecular interactions during adaptive and maladaptive responses to cellular stress induced by hyperammonemia.
