New insights on cellular structures strengthening mechanisms and thermal stability of an austenitic stainless steel fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion

Thomas Voisin et al.

Summary: The rapid solidification cellular structures in 316L austenitic stainless steels fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion were found to have specific crystallographic orientations in cell walls, which act as barriers to dislocation movement and contribute to material strengthening. Additionally, oxide precipitates confined inside cell walls also enhance the material's strength. Overall, the understanding of these intrinsic characteristics and strengthening mechanisms can help improve the material's thermal stability and high strength.

Effect of micro-segregation of alloying elements on the precipitation behaviour in laser surface engineered Alloy 718

Srinivas Aditya Mantri et al.

Summary: Laser surface engineering has been used to simulate microstructural evolution during laser-based additive manufacturing of Alloy 718. The micro-segregation of alloying elements in the fusion zone has a significant impact on local precipitation behavior. The dendritic structure formed by rapid melting and solidification exhibits three distinct zones and contains various types of precipitates within the austenite matrix.

Scanning Manufacturing Parameters Determining the Residual Stress State in LPBF IN718 Small Parts

Itziar Serrano-Munoz et al.

Summary: The influence of different scan strategies on the residual stress state of an as-built IN718 alloy produced by LPBF was investigated in this study. It was found that long scan vector strategies result in higher residual stress compared to short scan vector strategies, and 67 degrees-rotation strategies generate lower residual stress compared to 90 degrees-alternation strategies. Neutron diffraction and X-ray diffraction techniques revealed significant spatial non-uniformity in residual stress distribution.

Strengthening mechanisms in selective laser-melted Inconel718 superalloy

Shuya Zhang et al.

Summary: The microstructures and mechanical properties of Inconel 718 (IN718) alloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) are evaluated under different conditions, with strengthening mechanisms including grain boundary, solid solution, precipitation, and dislocation strengthening. The strength is consistently higher in the horizontal direction than in the vertical direction, attributed to differences in dislocation density, effective grain size, and Taylor factor.
