Understanding and suppressing shear band formation in strut-based lattice structures manufactured by laser powder bed fusion

Xiaoyang Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the formation mechanism of shear band in metallic lattice structures under compression and approaches to suppress it. Experimental and finite element analysis results showed that controlling the diameter ratios of the struts could suppress shear band formation, leading to more stable compressive deformation and higher energy absorption capacity in lattice structures.

Combinational design of heterogeneous lattices with hybrid region stiffness tuning for additive manufacturing

Nan Yang et al.

Summary: Lattices with engineered properties are important in various engineering applications, but current additive manufacturing (AM) and computer-aided design (CAD) methods have limitations. A new AM & CAD method is proposed in this study, which integrates all processes of designing complex lattice structures and can design heterogeneous lattice structures with irregular, gradient, and hybrid features.

Architected cellular materials: A review on their mechanical properties towards fatigue-tolerant design and fabrication

M. Benedetti et al.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing is now a mature technology that is being used to produce high-performance parts, including mission-critical components. The intentional design of porous metal structures, such as cellular or lattice structures, offers advantages in terms of specific mechanical or performance characteristics. While concerns over structural integrity remain, improvements in the manufacturing processes are leading to better fatigue properties for additively manufactured cellular structures.

Size effects on microstructure and mechanical properties of additively manufactured copper-chromium-niobium alloy

Gabriel Demeneghi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the size effects on microstructure and mechanical properties of Laser Powder Bed Fusion Copper-Chromium-Niobium Alloys. Results show that porosity is highly dependent on thickness, with an almost 75% decrease in as-built condition and a 99.7% decrease in HIP condition by increasing wall thickness. The increase in porosity has a notable effect on the mechanical properties, with yield strength and ultimate tensile strength decreasing by more than 20% as thickness decreases.

Strain rate effects on the mechanical behavior of porous titanium with different pore sizes

J. H. Zhao et al.

Summary: High strain-rate and quasi-static compression tests were conducted on powder-sintered porous titanium with different pore sizes, revealing that plastic deformation nucleation contributes to increased rate sensitivity at high strain rates. The deformation behavior was characterized using in situ X-ray imaging.
