A machine-learning fatigue life prediction approach of additively manufactured metals

Hongyixi Bao et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of defects on the fatigue life of selective laser melted Ti-6Al-4V alloy was explored using a machine learning method, specifically supported by a support vector machine. Through a combination of high cycle fatigue post mortem examination and synchrotron X-ray tomography, geometric features of critical defects were acquired and trained. The results showed a high coefficient of determination of 0.99 between predicted and experimental fatigue lives, indicating strong training ability of the SVM model.

Fatigue reliability analysis for structures with hybrid uncertainties combining quadratic response surface and polynomial chaos expansion

Zesheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel uncertainty analysis method for structural fatigue life prediction, considering hybrid uncertainties. The method incorporates PCE, SCC collocation technique, and LHS method to establish a fatigue reliability analysis for unknown coefficients estimation. Validation of the proposed method's feasibility and efficiency is demonstrated through three numerical examples.

Image-based multiscale modeling with spatially varying microstructures from experiments: Demonstration with additively manufactured metal in fatigue and fracture

Orion L. Kafka et al.

Summary: This manuscript introduces a novel modeling framework for predicting mechanical performance in materials with spatially varying microstructure. The method allows for parametric studies exploring the dispersion of voids in additively manufactured metals, and demonstrates its ability to capture variability in part scale performance due to individual microstructures and their distribution. This approach shows promise for application in AM metals.
