Steric Effects on the Formation of Self-Assembled Monolayers of Alicyclic Thiol Derivatives on Au(111)

Sicheon Seong et al.

Summary: The steric effects on the formation of alicyclic thiolate self-assembled monolayers on Au(111) were investigated by characterizing the surface structures and reductive desorption behaviors of monolayers derived from cyclohexanethiol (CHT) and 1-methylcyclohexanethiols (MCHT) using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and cyclic voltammetry. Results showed that the differences in lateral interactions and structural order of monolayers influenced the reductive desorption potentials, with CHT and MCHT monolayers exhibiting potentials at -0.984 V and -0.974 V respectively.
