Elastase treatment of tendon specifically impacts the mechanical properties of the interfascicular matrix

Marta S. Godinho et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that removing elastin from tendons affects the mechanical properties of the interfascicular matrix, specifically leading to decreased recoverability and fatigue resistance. Maintaining a functional elastin network within the IFM is essential for maintaining tendon integrity.

Modeling of human intervertebral disc annulus fibrosus with complex multi-fiber networks

Farshid Ghezelbash et al.

Summary: The study developed three novel models of human AF with complex collagen and elastic fiber networks and compared their performance with seven published models. The importance of accurately simulating individual lamellae as distinct layers, and testing parameters in constructing and validating AF constitutive models was emphasized. Variations in sample geometry and boundary conditions significantly affected stress-strain responses in tissue-level tests, indicating the need to replicate experimental conditions closely in model studies.

Microstructural and mechanical characterization of the layers of human descending thoracic aortas

Marco Amabili et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of human aortas are closely related to the layered tissue and microstructure at different length scales. Collagen fibers carry most of the load at larger strains, while their orientation distributions differ depending on the observation direction.

Bio-composites reinforced with unique coral collagen fibers: Towards biomimetic-based small diameter vascular grafts

Shir Wertheimer et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally, with coronary artery disease accounting for 42% and often requiring surgical intervention. A new biocomposite material system using long collagen fibers from soft corals embedded in an alginate matrix was introduced to develop tissue-engineered small-diameter blood vessels. This novel graft demonstrated both mechanical and biological compatibility and shows potential for small-diameter blood vessel replacement.

Summary: The research discussed the use of biomaterials and scaffolds for bone regeneration, emphasizing the importance of selecting suitable materials and manufacturing methods. Composite scaffolds based on type-I-collagen and electrospinning technologies were explored, with optimized collagen-based electrospun scaffolds and mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles successfully designed to resemble bone ECM at the nanoscale.

Structural biomimetics in soft synthetic composite materials: A proof-of-concept alginate-polyamide soft hierarchical composite

M. Sharabi et al.

Summary: Natural materials often have hierarchical architectures that are efficient in mechanical terms. This study focused on a biomimetic composite made from polyamide fibers and a hydrogel matrix, mimicking the structure and mechanical function of natural soft composites. The composite exhibited large deformations and nonlinear material behavior, with controlled strain stiffening and transition between matrix-dominated and fiber-dominated behavior. The bio-inspired composite showed mechanical behaviors similar to natural soft composites, providing insights for the future design of soft architectural composites.
