Kutemba K. Kapanji et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the environmental impact and sustainability of six (bio)energy self-sufficient biorefineries, with results showing that the use of dilute acid pretreatment leads to lower environmental impacts. Among the scenarios, the biorefinery producing glucaric acid via dilute acid pretreatment was found to be the most favorable in terms of environmental burdens and sustainability.

Integrative design of the optimal biorefinery and bioethanol supply chain under the water-energy-food-land (WEFL) nexus framework

Chanhee You et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive decision model for the integrative design of a biorefinery for bioethanol production and its supply chain under the WEFL nexus framework, aiming to minimize total costs to meet society's needs. The model was validated through a case study in Jeju Island and showed that the nexus optimization scenario required higher energy supply costs but could satisfy society demands with smaller land, water, and energy consumption compared to the cost optimization scenario.
