Impact of the lignin type and source on the characteristics of physical lignin hydrogels

Summary: Lignin has shown promise as a natural polymer for the synthesis of hydrogels, and can be extracted from lignocellulosic materials such as nut shells. In this study, lignin was extracted from almond and walnut shells using different biorefinery schemes and then combined with poly (vinyl alcohol) to synthesize hydrogels. The results showed significant variations in the properties of the hydrogels depending on the different lignin samples used.

Impact of mild and harsh conditions of formic acid-based organosolv pretreatment on biomass fractionation of sugarcane tops

Summary: This study focuses on the impact of formic acid-based organosolv (FAOS) pretreatment on sugarcane tops (SCT) for biomass fractionation. The best conditions for FAOS pretreatment of SCT were found to be 125 degrees Celsius pretreatment temperature, 90 min pretreatment time, and 1:7.5 solid to liquid ratio. Temperatures and times higher than these values adversely affected SCT fractionation.

Acetosolv pretreatment of wood for biorefinery applications

The non-recovered fraction correlates with the amount of removed hemicellulose and lignin.

Ethylene glycol based acid pretreatment of corn stover for cellulose enzymatic hydrolysis

Summary: The study demonstrates that pretreatment using ethylene glycol and dilute sulfuric acid for lignocellulose fractionation is a simple, efficient, and promising process for corn stover biorefinery. Delignification and cellulose retention rates are high, leading to a significant increase in enzymatic hydrolysis sugar yield compared to untreated corn stover. The regenerated lignin can also be utilized to produce renewable aromatic chemicals and alkane fuels.
