A review on recent disposal of hazardous sewage sludge via anaerobic digestion and novel composting

Chin Seng Liew et al.

Summary: Low-cost methods such as vermicomposting and black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) have shown comparable performances to anaerobic digestion in terms of carbon recovery, nitrogen recovery, and mass reduction. However, anaerobic digestion excels in pathogen destruction due to its high operational temperature.

Dependence of pyrolysis temperature and lignocellulosic physical-chemical properties of biochar on its wettability

Luiza Useviciute et al.

Summary: The wettability of biochar is a complex property that can be influenced by various factors including feedstock type, pyrolysis temperature, and physical-chemical properties. Research findings suggest that the variability of biochar wettability can be predicted based on its average pore size, while the variability of water holding capacity can be predicted according to its ash content.

Improving sewage sludge compost process and quality by carbon sources addition

Liqiang Meng et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of carbon sources on compost process and quality in lab-scale sewage sludge composting. Results showed that adding readily degradable carbon sources could promote organic matter degradation, improve nitrogen conversion, and accelerate compost maturation. Glucose and sucrose addition resulted in increased dissolved organic carbon, CO2 emission, dehydrogenase activity, nitrification, and germination index during composting.

Novel K-enriched organomineral fertilizer from sewage sludge-biochar: Chemical, physical and mineralogical characterization

Joisman Fachini et al.

Summary: The study introduces a novel K-enriched sewage sludge biochar fertilizer that can improve crop K use efficiency. Enriched with KCl and K2SO4 using various technological methods, the K2O content in the fertilizer is significantly higher than pure SSB. The morphology and physical characteristics of the enriched OSSBs are more influenced by the form of the fertilizer rather than the source of K.

Overview of the Benefits and Challenges Associated with Pelletizing Biochar

Ali Mohammadi

Summary: Biochar can be derived from various organic materials, but research on biochar pellets, particularly on the effects of different feedstock on the densification behavior of biochar, is currently lacking. Despite the benefits associated with the use of biochar pellets, challenges in pelletizing biochars from different feedstock under various carbonization conditions still remain to be addressed in order to promote wider adoption in various application fields.

Efficient recovery of phosphate from aqueous solution using biochar derived from co-pyrolysis of sewage sludge with eggshell

Jie Yang et al.

Summary: A novel Ca-modified biochar was prepared by co-pyrolysis of eggshell and sewage sludge for phosphorus recovery from wastewater. The biochar exhibited excellent phosphate adsorption and heavy metal removal abilities, and could also serve as a slow-release P fertilizer to promote plant growth.
