Forage Potential of Cereal/Legume Intercrops: Agronomic Performances, Yield, Quality Forage and LER in Two Harvesting Times in a Mediterranean Environment

Monica Bacchi et al.

Summary: In a two-year field experiment, crop yield and quality of seven annual forages in sole crop and mixtures were evaluated, with the total calculated LER always greater than one, indicating advantages in both yield and quality for intercropped forages. Italian ryegrass showed low competitive ability in mixtures but had the best green fodder quality. Triticale and barley harvested for silage provided the best results, influenced mainly by the cereal grain content.

Positive but variable effects of crop diversification on biodiversity and ecosystem services

Damien Beillouin et al.

Summary: Crop diversification in agroecosystems has positive effects on crop production, biodiversity, and ecosystem services, with different strategies showing varying impacts on specific ecosystem services. Agroforestry is particularly effective in delivering multiple ecosystem services, while variety mixtures provide the lowest benefits.

Diversity increases yield but reduces harvest index in crop mixtures

Jianguo Chen et al.

Summary: Resource allocation to reproduction is a critical trait for plant fitness. While plant diversity increases plant biomass, its effects on seed yield of crops are ambiguous. In mixtures, the reduced harvest index of crop species may contribute to higher seed yield.
