Rolling friction measurement of slightly non-spherical particles using direct experiments and image analysis

Arpit Agarwal et al.

Summary: A novel method based on image analysis is proposed to calculate the rolling friction coefficient of slightly non-spherical particles, and is found to be in good agreement with directly measured values. This method provides a new approach to estimate rolling friction in situations where direct measurement is not possible. The results suggest potential wide usage in DEM simulations of powders and bulk solids.

Granular internal dynamics in a silo discharged with a conveyor belt

D. Gella et al.

Summary: The dynamics of granular media in a silo controlled by a conveyor belt were experimentally investigated, showing that the outlet size and belt velocity can influence the flow properties. Analysis connecting the internal dynamics with the flow rate identified different flow regimes based on the gamma parameter, which integrates the normalized acceleration along the vertical direction.

Testing the novel method for angle of repose measurement based on area-weighted average slope of a triangular mesh

M. Klanfar et al.

Summary: A novel method for Angle of Repose (AoR) measurement based on 3D photogrammetry was developed and evaluated in this study, showing improved accuracy for mineral granular materials. Image-based methods demonstrated higher repeatability and accuracy compared to traditional methods, with irregularities during heap formation affecting measurement precision. The 3D photogrammetry and larger sample size were found to be beneficial in producing more reliable results.

DEM Parameter Calibration of Maize Seeds and the Effect of Rolling Friction

Long Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the necessity for accurately calibrating the coefficients of rolling friction between maize seed particles and between the particles and the boundary in DEM simulations. The study determines the methods used to calibrate these coefficients by analyzing their sensitivity to the angle of repose test. The results show that these coefficients have a significant influence on test results and must be accurately calibrated.

Pellet Production from Residual Biomass of Greenery Maintenance in a Small-Scale Company to Improve Sustainability

Alessio Ilari et al.

Summary: Replacing fossil energy sources with renewable energy sources, particularly by utilizing residual biomass for energy production, can help address environmental issues and improve sustainability, especially for small-medium enterprises. Results of the study indicate that some wood blends meet the quality pellet production standards according to ISO technical norms, but not all mixtures are suitable for this purpose. This study provides a valuable foundation for future research in this area.
