Reference intervals and values for fecal cortisol, aldosterone, and the ratio of cortisol to dehydroepiandrosterone metabolites in four species of cetaceans

Lance J. Miller et al.

Summary: The study aimed to establish reference intervals and values for physiological indicators of animal welfare in cetaceans. Fecal samples were collected and analyzed for cortisol, aldosterone, and DHEA metabolites, with age, sex, and time identified as significant predictors for metabolite concentrations. The development of an iOS mobile application ZooPhysioTrak provided easy access to species-specific reference intervals and values, while additional reference intervals were constructed for facilities without access to the application.

Activity Budget Comparisons Using Long-Term Observations of a Group of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) under Human Care: Implications for Animal Welfare

Tim Huettner et al.

Summary: The study showed that the activity budgets of dolphins are significantly affected by individual and external factors, and construction noise can alter dolphin behavior. Behavioral observations are crucial welfare indicators, especially when used in conjunction with other measures, providing important information about the welfare status of animals.

Reference intervals and values for fecal cortisol, aldosterone, and the ratio of cortisol to dehydroepiandrosterone metabolites in four species of cetaceans

Lance J. Miller et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish reference intervals and values for new physiological indicators in four species of cetaceans, utilizing a mobile application for easy access to these values. Factors influencing hormone metabolite concentrations were examined, with age, sex, and time of year showing significant predictive value. Information gained from this study and the application can aid in making informed management decisions for cetaceans in zoological facilities.
