Preparing for a pandemic: spending dynamics and panic buying during the COVID-19 first wave

Martin O'Connell et al.

Summary: During the first infection wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, households in all socio-economic groups showed unusually high demand for storable products, with wealthier households exhibiting the largest demand spikes. Despite attention on extreme purchasing behavior, the higher aggregate demand was driven by more households choosing to buy storable products, rather than significantly larger quantities bought per trip. Temporary transaction limits introduced after the demand spike are unlikely to prevent stock-outs.

Steak and bleach as science communication heroes? The rise of post-corona, posthuman irony

Padraig Murphy

Summary: Since early 2020, communicating risks associated with COVID-19 and providing safety advice have been top priorities for health agencies and governments. Global brands engaged consumers and publics by acknowledging the crisis that engulfed the world through increasingly sophisticated marketing strategies. This paper critically assesses how private companies took up important communication responsibilities about coronavirus, analysing online and social media outputs through a lens of anthropomorphising and posthuman brands. A typology of brand strategies was developed based on engagement and how COVID-19 science, care and prevention were communicated, leading to a reflection on the implications for health and environmental communication and science communicators.

Panic buying in the COVID-19 pandemic: A multi-country examination

Tahir Islam et al.

Summary: This study explores how external stimuli such as Limited Quantity Scarcity (LQS) and Limited Time Scarcity (LTS) during the COVID-19 pandemic influence emotional arousal among consumers, leading to impulsive and obsessive buying behaviors. Findings reveal that LQS and LTS significantly increase perceived arousal which in turn leads to more impulsive and obsessive buying. Excessive social media use intensifies the relationship between scarcity messages and perceived arousal, while the urge to buy impulsively moderates the relationship between perceived arousal and behavioral outcomes in all selected countries except for India.
