High specificity of the Salmonella Pullorum/Gallinarum rapid plate agglutination test despite vaccinations against Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium

Christiaan ter Veen et al.

Summary: Monitoring of breeding stock for Salmonella Pullorum or Gallinarum infections is mandatory in Europe, and vaccinations against Salmonella Enteritidis and Typhimurium are increasingly common. Research shows that live SE/ST vaccines do not affect the specificity of the RPA SP/SG test, while inactivated vaccines may lead to reduced diagnostic specificity. Serum dilution plays a key role in the accuracy of the test.

The endolysin of theAcinetobacter baumanniiphage vB_AbaP_D2 shows broad antibacterial activity

Yuyu Yuan et al.

Summary: The study identified the bacteriophage D2 with potent antimicrobial activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria, particularly Acinetobacter baumannii, and its endolysin Abtn-4 showed the ability to reduce biofilm formation. Abtn-4 exhibited broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as phage-resistant bacterial mutants. These findings suggest that endolysin Abtn-4 may serve as a promising candidate for the treatment of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.

Sex differences in growth performance are related to cecal microbiota in chicken

Lei Cui et al.

Summary: This study revealed that the cecal microbiota of male chickens is closely related to glycan metabolism, while that of female chickens is more closely linked to lipid metabolism, leading to differences in gene expression levels associated with glycan and lipid metabolism. Additionally, positive correlations were found between glycan and lipid metabolism and specific bacterial genera in male and female chickens, respectively, indicating sex-dependent associations between chicken growth performance and cecal microbiota.

Cloning and expression analysis of fused holin-endolysin from RL bacteriophage; Exhibits broad activity against multi drug resistant pathogens

Abdul Basit et al.

Summary: Endolysins are considered as effective alternatives to antibiotics for controlling drug-resistant bacterial pathogens, with promising specificity and low chances of resistance development. In this study, endolysins RL-Lys and RL_Hlys from RL phage were found active against a wide range of multidrug-resistant strains, with RL_Hlys showing higher activity due to the presence of holin. Protein ligand docking and molecular dynamic simulation results revealed that the C-terminus region of endolysin plays a crucial role in cell wall binding and hydrolyzing gram-negative bacterial pathogens, making RL-Lys and RL_Hlys promising candidates for antibiotic alternatives against a broad range of MDR gram-negative and positive bacterial pathogens.
