Meta-analysis of genetic representativeness of plant populations under ex situ conservation in contrast to wild source populations

Xinzeng Wei et al.

Summary: The study shows that current ex situ plant collections do not effectively capture the genetic variation of wild populations. The low genetic representativeness of ex situ populations is caused by incomplete sampling from wild populations and genetic erosion during ex situ conservation. To improve the genetic representativeness of ex situ plant collections, more thorough sampling strategies in future collecting efforts and addition of new individuals where needed are necessary.

GENETIC DIVERSITY ASSESSMENT OF EX SITU COLLECTIONS OF ENDANGERED QUERCUS HINCKLEYI

Janet Rizner Backs et al.

Summary: Research shows that the ex situ collection of Q. hinckleyi, though small, has high allelic diversity capturing about 57% of the wild population's allelic diversity. The ex situ plants contain 22 new alleles contributing 13% of the species' total allelic diversity and have unique genotypes, making up 15% of the species' genotypic variation.

Summary: Research suggests that optimizing sampling strategies in ex situ plant conservation can enhance genetic analysis. The study indicates a need for revision of current genetic capture thresholds to better protect important diversity in populations of different sizes.

Plant translocations in Europe and the Mediterranean: Geographical and climatic directions and distances from source to host sites

Mohamed Diallo et al.

Summary: Plant translocations in the Western Palearctic aimed at mitigating the consequences of climate change by relocating to slightly cooler climatic conditions. However, climate considerations have not been fully integrated into translocation projects, indicating a need for greater attention in the face of rapid anthropogenic climate change.
