Global analysis of the slope of forest land

This study aimed to create a globally consistent dataset of forest land distribution and area within different slope classes using GIS analysis. The majority of forests were found to be on slopes less than 15 degrees, with significant portions also present on slopes ranging from 15 to over 30 degrees, offering valuable insights for global forest resource management.

Summary: This study estimated the cost of producing wood chips from SDT, compared the cost and productivity of whole-tree and hybrid cut-to-length treatments, and examined the cost of producing sawlog and chips from hardwood pulp using different cost apportioning methods. The results showed that the total harvesting cost was 53% higher in Hyb-CTL than that of WT, and the cost of producing wood chips from hardwood pulp as a by-product was half of the cost calculated using the joint-products allocation method.

Three harvesting models were introduced and compared: narrow trail, wide access trail, and schematic extraction. Increasing the usage rate of the harvesting equipment could significantly reduce the harvesting and forwarding costs.
