Effect of onychomycosis and treatment on patient-reported quality-of-life outcomes: A systematic review

Claire R. Stewart et al.

Summary: This study showed that onychomycosis significantly impacts patients' quality of life, especially for women and those with fingernail involvement. All treatment options led to improvements in quality of life, with oral treatments showing greater efficacy compared to topical treatments.

The Growing Problem of Antifungal Resistance in Onychomycosis and Other Superficial Mycoses

Aditya K. Gupta et al.

Summary: Superficial mycoses are increasingly developing resistance to current antifungal medications, particularly to terbinafine. Mix infections and single-point mutations are major factors contributing to this resistance.

Production and characterization of bovine hoof membranes as standardized in vitro model for nail studies

Margherita Bonetti et al.

Summary: Studies using bovine hoof membranes as a nail in vitro model primarily focus on permeability, with limited reference to safety and efficacy evaluation of products. The production and characterization of hoof membranes are non-standardized procedures, which can impact the reliability of the model; assessing mechanical properties is particularly challenging due to limited scientific literature coverage. This research presents a feasibility protocol for obtaining a suitable nail model for drug permeability studies or safety and efficacy assessments of final products.

Effect of Penetration Enhancers on Toenail Delivery of Efinaconazole from Hydroalcoholic Preparations

Jun Soo Park et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that incorporating permeation enhancers in topical preparations can effectively enhance the penetration of antifungal drugs into toenails, particularly solutions containing Labrafac PG showing higher penetration. Combining multiple penetration enhancers can improve the penetration of EFN across the hoof membrane, and the novel topical solution prepared is also stable under ambient conditions.
