Cell therapy in patients with heart failure: a comprehensive review and emerging concepts

Roberto Bolli et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the results of clinical trials on cell therapy for patients with heart failure (HF). The results of Phase I-II trials in HF show promise, with several studies meeting their primary endpoint and demonstrating efficacy. Among the different cell types tested, mesenchymal stromal cells derived from bone marrow, umbilical cord, or adipose tissue show the most potential. Embryonic stem cells are unlikely to become a clinical therapy. The utility of cell therapy in HF remains to be determined, and larger, rigorous Phase III trials are needed.

In situ biomimetic lyotropic liquid crystal gel for full-thickness cartilage defect regeneration

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: The study showed that HLC gel can improve the rheological properties of the gel, enhance joint protection by increasing mechanical strength, elasticity, and lubrication, prolong drug release and retention in the joint cavity for over 4 weeks, and provide a combined effect of kartogenin and hyaluronic acid for cartilage repair. Pharmacodynamic studies demonstrated that HLC gel was the most effective in promoting chondrogenesis and protecting subchondral bone.

Direct in vivo reprogramming with non-viral sequential targeting nanoparticles promotes cardiac regeneration

Qiaozi Wang et al.

Summary: This study developed a non-viral biomimetic system for cardiac regeneration by coating neutrophil-mimicking membranes on mesoporous silicon nanoparticles loaded with microRNA1, 133, 208, and 499. The system utilized the inflammation-homing ability of neutrophil membrane protein and FH peptide's high affinity to tenascin-C produced by CFs for targeted delivery of miRCombo, leading to reprogramming of resident CFs into iCMs and improved cardiac function in a mouse model of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury.

Self-assembled lyotropic liquid crystal gel for osteoarthritis treatment via anti-inflammation and cartilage protection

Liling Mei et al.

Summary: The HLC precursor, combining hyaluronic acid and celecoxib, showed excellent anti-inflammation and cartilage protection capability with prolonged drug retention time in the joint cavity. The LLC/HLC gel demonstrated biodegradability, biocompatibility, and promising therapeutic effects in treating OA.
