The Oral and Gut Bacterial Microbiomes: Similarities, Differences, and Connections

Katherine A. Maki et al.

Summary: Comparing oral and gut microbiome communities in healthy humans revealed that oral microbiome has higher alpha diversity compared to the gut microbiome, with significant differences at the species level but slightly similar at the strain level. Shotgun metagenomics sequencing showed greater taxonomic resolution and shared taxonomy between oral and gut microbiomes.

Alterations in the human oral and gut microbiomes and lipidomics in COVID-19

Zhigang Ren et al.

Summary: This study characterized the oral microbiome in patients with COVID-19, showing decreased microbial diversity and changes in specific bacteria. The study also identified potential biomarkers for diagnosing COVID-19 with high accuracy across different regions and successfully distinguished recovered patients from active patients based on lipid profiles.

SARS-CoV-2 infection of the oral cavity and saliva

Ni Huang et al.

Summary: The study highlights the potential role of the oral cavity in COVID-19 pathogenesis, with evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and transmission via saliva. Viral shedding dynamics in saliva correlated with symptoms, and asymptomatic individuals were found to harbor sustained salivary antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 post-recovery.

Integrating taxonomic, functional, and strain-level profiling of diverse microbial communities with bioBakery 3

Francesco Beghini et al.

Summary: Culture-independent analyses of microbial communities have advanced significantly in the past decade, particularly due to the emergence of Shotgun Metagenomics. bioBakery 3, a newly developed toolset, enhances the accuracy and scope of taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic profiling in microbial community studies by providing an expanding set of reference sequences.
