Perspective on the clone library method for infectious diseases

Kazuhiro Yatera et al.

Summary: Culture-independent molecular methods, such as DNA sequencing techniques targeting the 16S-rRNA gene and/or other housekeeping genes, NGS, and metagenomic analysis, have been developed for detecting microorganisms in the human body, providing information on microbiomes of individuals with or without infections. Analyzing the microbiomes of respiratory and other infections can help identify causative bacteria and understand the role of specific microorganisms in diseases.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Probiotic infant cereal improves children's gut microbiota: Insights using the Simulator of Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME®)

Mateus Kawata Salgaco et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of an infant cereal with probiotics on infants' gut microbiota by simulating human gastrointestinal conditions. The results showed that the cereal can stimulate the growth of beneficial Lactobacillus strains, reduce NH4+ production, and increase the production of short chain fatty acids, especially butyric acid.

Effect of fecal microbiota transplantation on neurological restoration in a spinal cord injury mouse model: involvement of brain-gut axis

Yingli Jing et al.

Summary: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from healthy uninjured mice into SCI mice was found to improve locomotor and GI functions through promoting neuronal axonal regeneration, enhancing intestinal barrier integrity and modifying gut microbiome composition. Additionally, FMT increased levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in feces and downregulated inflammatory signaling pathways in the spinal cord and gut of SCI mice. These findings suggest that FMT may have a neuroprotective effect on SCI.

Summary: The study revealed significant differences in the microbiota composition between patients with ESCC and those with PN esophagus, with the former showing reduced microbial diversity and decreased abundances of specific taxa. Functional analysis indicated altered nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase functions in the microbiota of ESCC patients. These findings suggest that specific microbes and microbiota may influence the development of ESCC.

Triage-driven diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus for early detection of esophageal adenocarcinoma using deep learning

Marcel Gehrung et al.

Summary: Deep learning methods have been successfully integrated with expert knowledge and clinical decision pathways to automate the analysis of Cytosponge-TFF3 test samples for the early detection of Barrett's esophagus. By defining triage classes based on pathologists' decision patterns, the workload of pathologists can be reduced by 57% without compromising diagnostic performance. The clinician-in-the-loop deep learning system streamlines the workflow for Barrett's esophagus detection while maintaining the accuracy of manual review.

Gut microbiome alterations in high-fat-diet-fed mice are associated with antibiotic tolerance

Yuan Liu et al.

Summary: A high-fat diet reduces antibiotic efficacy in a mouse model by altering the gut microbiota and decreasing the levels of indole-3-acetic acid, potentially converting tolerant bacterial cells into susceptible metabolically active cells. The antagonistic effect of a high-fat diet on antibiotic treatment is associated with changes in gut microbiota and the production of indole-3-acetic acid.
