Metabolic Syndrome and Risk of Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma: A Case-Control Study From Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results-Medicare-Linked Database

Yi Lu et al.

Summary: In individuals aged over 65, metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components were significant risk factors for upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) with consistent associations in different tumor stages, grades, and tumor size. Even if a subject did not meet the criteria for MetS, having just one of the components still elevated the risk for UTUC. Strategies to control the epidemic of MetS and its components may help reduce the burden of UTUC.

Outcome of patients with advanced upper tract urothelial carcinoma treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Melissa Bersanelli et al.

Summary: The systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical studies on advanced UTUC patients treated with ICI did not show statistically significant effects in reducing the risk of death compared to standard chemotherapy. Subgroup analyses from randomized clinical trials are needed to provide more conclusive evidence.

Urinary pH is an independent predictor of upper tract recurrence in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer patients with a smoking history

Hiroki Ide et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with a history of BCG therapy had a lower incidence of UTUC, while in patients with a smoking history, concomitant CIS and lower urinary pH increased the risk of UTUC recurrence.

Low urine pH associated with sarcopenia in the elderly A multi-center observational study

Akihiro Saitsu et al.

Summary: The study found a significant association between sarcopenia in the elderly and urine pH, age, and exercise habit, indicating a potential link between metabolic acidosis and the pathophysiology of sarcopenia. The simple biomarker of urine pH, obtained through dipstick tests, may be helpful in detecting sarcopenia in clinical settings.

Efficacy of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors in Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinomas: Current Knowledge and Future Directions

Jonathan Thouvenin et al.

Summary: Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is a rare and aggressive malignancy with different mutational profiles compared to bladder urothelial carcinoma. Molecular characterization studies have shown that UTUC has a higher level of FGFR3 alterations and a T-cell depleted immune microenvironment. The evolving therapeutic landscape in urothelial carcinoma includes the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors based on understanding of molecular alterations and immune responses.
