Open vs minimally invasive radical trachelectomy in early-stage cervical cancer: International Radical Trachelectomy Assessment Study

Gloria Salvo et al.

Summary: The 4.5-year disease-free survival rates did not differ between open radical trachelectomy and minimally invasive radical trachelectomy, with low recurrence rates in both groups. Ongoing prospective studies may help guide future management of early-stage cervical cancer.

Preoperative Conization and Risk of Recurrence in Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Radical Hysterectomy for Early Stage Cervical Cancer: A Multicenter Study

Jvan Casarin et al.

Summary: This multicenter retrospective study investigated factors associated with poorer oncologic outcomes in patients undergoing laparoscopic radical hysterectomy for early stage cervical cancer. Tumor size >= 2 cm was identified as the most important risk factor influencing disease-free survival, while preoperative conization may play a protective role in patients with IB1 tumor.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by conization in stage IB2-IIA1 cervical cancer larger than 2 cm: a pilot study

Rosa de Vincenzo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by cold-knife conization (CKC) for patients with 2018 FIGO stage IB2-IIA1 cervical cancer who desired to maintain fertility. The results showed that this approach could be a conservative treatment option with oncologic outcomes similar to trachelectomy in the same stage, and with potential benefits in terms of obstetrical outcomes.

Protective Role of Conization Before Radical Hysterectomy in Early-Stage Cervical Cancer: A Propensity-Score Matching Study

Nicolo Bizzarri et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the prognostic role of conization performed before radical hysterectomy in early-stage cervical carcinoma. Results showed that conization before radical surgery was associated with improved 5-year disease-free survival and lower likelihood of receiving adjuvant treatment. No significant difference in perioperative complications and overall survival was observed between patients who received conization and those who did not. Tumor diameter >20 mm was identified as the only independent risk factor affecting overall survival in both groups.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Validation of tumour-free distance as novel prognostic marker in early-stage cervical cancer: a retrospective, single-centre, cohort study

Nicolo Bizzarri et al.

Summary: The study found that tumor-free distance (TFD) ≤ 3.0 mm, combined with lymph vascular space involvement, was the strongest predictor for lymph node metastasis. TFD ≤ 3.0 mm was associated with worse 5-year disease-free survival and overall survival compared to TFD > 3.0 mm. The difference in disease-free survival was particularly significant in patients with low-risk factors who did not receive adjuvant treatment.

Summary: The latest edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer's TNM staging manual, released in January 2018, will be electronically published chapter by chapter. The first chapter, focusing on cervical cancer staging, has already been released. Changes include incorporating imaging and surgical findings, eliminating lateral spread from T1a, adding a subcategory to T1b (T1b3), and updating histopathology to reflect HPV-associated and HPV-independent carcinomas.

Sentinel lymph node in cervical cancer: time to move forward

Vincent Balaya et al.

Summary: In early-stage cervical cancer, sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is an accurate method for assessing lymph node involvement and provides more accurate staging and detection of metastases.
