Comparison Between the 2021 USPSTF Lung Cancer Screening Criteria and Other Lung Cancer Screening Criteria for Racial Disparity in Eligibility

Chan Yeu Pu et al.

Summary: In 2021, the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) expanded the age and smoking pack-year requirement for lung cancer screening. This study compares the 2021 USPSTF criteria with other screening criteria and evaluates the sensitivity and specificity of these criteria by race. The findings suggest that the changes in the USPSTF 2021 guidelines improve access to lung cancer screening and reduce racial disparities.

Analysis of the 30-Pack-Year Smoking Threshold in African Americans From an Underserved Lung Cancer Screening Program

Anupam Basu et al.

Summary: In an underserved healthcare system, African Americans were more likely to report <30 pack-years of smoking history, despite higher incidence of lung cancer. The 30-pack-year threshold was not associated with lung cancer diagnosis, raising concerns about its appropriateness in African Americans.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

Social needs and health-related quality of life among African American cancer survivors: Results from the Detroit Research on Cancer Survivors study

Theresa A. Hastert et al.

Summary: The study found that social needs are common among African American cancer survivors and are associated with significant differences in HRQOL. In particular, not receiving healthcare due to lack of transportation and housing instability showed the strongest associations with HRQOL.

A Call to Action: Dismantling Racial Injustices in Preclinical Research and Clinical Care of Black Patients Living with Small Cell Lung Cancer

Portia L. Thomas et al.

Summary: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive disease associated with tobacco exposure, but there are additional genetic and environmental risk factors. Preliminary data suggests Black individuals may have a lower risk of developing SCLC compared to white individuals, but more research is needed to verify this disparity and address the lack of biological information and clinical trial diversity.

isomiRs-Hidden Soldiers in the miRNA Regulatory Army, and How to Find Them?

Ilias Glogovitis et al.

Summary: Research on microRNAs (miRNA) in cancer and other diseases has led to the development of diverse computational approaches and experimental methods for predicting and validating their biological and clinical significance as disease biomarkers. The use of next-generation deep sequencing has allowed for the discovery of new RNA biomarkers, including diverse sequence variants of mature miRNAs or isomiRs. However, challenges and pitfalls exist in the analysis of isomiR expression.

MiREDiBase, a manually curated database of validated and putative editing events in microRNAs

Gioacchino P. Marceca et al.

Summary: miRNAs are small non-coding RNAs that play a regulatory role in cellular processes. MiRNA editing is a post-transcriptional modification that can impact their biogenesis and target-binding ability. MiREDiBase is a manually curated catalog of miRNA editing events, serving as a valuable tool for cell biology and biomedical research.
