Electrochemotherapy in Mucosal Cancer of the Head and Neck: A Systematic Review

Primoz Strojan et al.

Summary: Electrochemotherapy, based on reversible electroporation and intracellular accumulation of hydrophilic drug molecules, is considered an effective and safe treatment for tumors, including mucosal cancer of the head and neck. Limited experience with ECT in mucosal HNC due to poor accessibility of tumors highlights the need for further research to confirm its potential as a treatment option in selected patients.

Electrochemotherapy in the Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer: Current Conditions and Future Directions

Tomohiro Enokida et al.

Summary: Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a new treatment modality for head and neck cancer, combining locally applied electric pulses with antineoplastic agents. It has shown promising efficacy and tolerable safety profile in clinical studies, making it a potential strategy for heavily pre-treated HNC patients. Efforts to improve its efficacy and expand its application are ongoing, with the combination of ECT with novel therapies like immune checkpoint inhibitors showing theoretical promise. Extensive, well-organized clinical studies and updated consensus guidelines are needed to bring this hopeful treatment to challenging situations in HNC patients.
