Treating the Metabolic Syndrome by Fecal Transplantation-Current Status

Stephen D. H. Malnick et al.

Summary: The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in influencing inflammatory responses, with an imbalance linked to various inflammatory conditions. Diets high in animal-based processed foods and sugar are associated with pro-inflammatory gut microbiomes, while plant- and fish-based diets can reduce inflammation. Fecal microbiome transplant is a potential treatment for modifying intestinal inflammation processes.

The gut microbiota-brain axis in behaviour and brain disorders

Livia H. Morais et al.

Summary: This Review discusses the intricate and potentially important connections between the gut microbiota and the brain, involving bidirectional communication along the gut-brain axis. Emerging evidence suggests that disruptions in microbial communities may be implicated in neurological disorders, with animal models providing valuable insights into the pathways linking the gut and the brain which could have tangible impacts on human health.

Influence of Mediterranean Diet on Human Gut Microbiota

Giuseppe Merra et al.

Summary: Changes in gut microbiota are correlated with health status, with the Mediterranean diet shown to modulate gut microbiota, increase diversity, and potentially prevent the onset of chronic non-communicable degenerative diseases. Additional controlled intervention studies are needed to further understand the correlations between dietary patterns and gut microbiota composition and activity.

Potential role of microbiome in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelits (CFS/ME)

Giuseppe Francesco Damiano Lupo et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant differences in the intestinal microbiota and metabolomic profile between CFS/ME patients and healthy controls, indicating characteristics of dysbiosis. Specific microbial compositions were observed in the oral and fecal samples of CFS/ME patients, along with abnormal levels of certain substances detected in the metabolomic analysis. Further research is needed to determine the causality and potential relationship between microbial changes and the onset of CFS/ME, as well as their association with secondary symptoms.

FOS/GOS attenuates high-fat diet induced bone loss via reversing microbiota dysbiosis, high intestinal permeability and systemic inflammation in mice

Zheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study revealed that long-term high-fat diet can lead to decreased bone mass, dysbiosis of gut microbiota, leaky gut, and systemic inflammation. Administration of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and/or galactooligosaccharides (GOS) significantly improved bone loss, regulated imbalanced differentiation of intestinal cells, reduced dysbiosis and gut permeability, decreased expression of inflammatory cytokines, ultimately protecting against high-fat diet-induced osteopenia.

Disruption of the pro-inflammatory, anti-inflammatory cytokines and tight junction proteins expression, associated with changes of the composition of the gut microbiota in patients with irritable bowel syndrome

V. Ivashkin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the changes in gut microbiome composition, tight junction proteins, and cytokines expression from the duodenum to the distal part of the colon in IBS patients and healthy volunteers. The results showed significantly increased expression of IL-2 and TNF-alpha in IBS patients, with decreased expression of IL-10, CLD-3, and CLD-5, as well as altered ratios of Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes in the gut microbiota of IBS patients compared to controls.
