The role of interleukin-18 in the diagnosis and monitoring of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis/macrophage activation syndrome - a systematic review

J. M. Krei et al.

Summary: IL-18 shows potential for aiding in the diagnosis and monitoring of HLH and MAS, with elevated levels distinguishing HLH from other inflammatory conditions. It is particularly useful in identifying MAS, but less clear in differentiating MAS from systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA). Larger, prospective multi-center studies are needed to further validate IL-18 as a diagnostic tool for these rare disorders.

Clinical significance of interleukin-18 for the diagnosis and prediction of disease course in systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis

Mao Mizuta et al.

Summary: The study showed that serum IL-18 levels can be used to differentiate between s-JIA and other diseases, and monitoring IL-18 levels can help predict the disease course and assess remission in s-JIA.
