Community assembly: perspectives from phytoplankton's studies

Carmen Rojo

Summary: The study of plankton community assembly has mainly focused on phytoplankton, aiming to find species associations, establish templates, and discuss assembly mechanisms. Future research will need to consider classical ecological mechanisms, as well as evolutionary and metacommunity processes to further advance our understanding of community assembly.

Dinoflagellates alter their carbon and nutrient metabolic strategies across environmental gradients in the central Pacific Ocean

Natalie R. Cohen et al.

Summary: A study across a 4,600-km transect in the central Pacific Ocean shows the importance of dinoflagellates in ecosystem and biogeochemical processes. By using multi-omics and geochemical analysis, dinoflagellate metabolism was found to change along the transect, from the euphotic to the mesopelagic zone. Dinoflagellates play a crucial role in carbon transformation by both photosynthetic fixation in the euphotic zone and remineralization in the mesopelagic zone.

Major restructuring of marine plankton assemblages under global warming

Fabio Benedetti et al.

Summary: The study found that with ocean warming, the overall richness of marine phytoplankton and zooplankton species increases, and their distribution shifts poleward at an accelerated speed. Zooplankton richness slightly declines in tropical regions but increases in temperate to subpolar latitudes. Climate change may threaten the contribution of plankton communities to ecosystem services.
