Neural modelling of the semantic predictability gain under challenging listening conditions

Anna Uta Rysop et al.

Summary: Neuroimaging studies show that when speech becomes more intelligible, highly predictable sentences lead to stronger activation of left-hemispheric semantic regions, accompanied by increased activity in frontal and medial regions. Moreover, effective connectivity between semantic regions may increase with the intelligibility of speech, while inhibitory influence from pre-supplementary motor area to left insula is strongest when predictability and intelligibility of sentences are either lowest or highest.

Relating the Past with the Present: Information Integration and Segregation during Ongoing Narrative Processing

Claire H. C. Chang et al.

Summary: This study found that the brain dynamically updates event representations by integrating new information over multiple minutes while segregating irrelevant input. The results showed that specific neural patterns related to storylines are reinstated during storyline transitions, with the effect increasing along the processing timescale hierarchy and peaking in the default mode network. Additionally, participants who exhibited stronger motif reinstatement performed better in integrating events from different storylines.
