The Formation/Decomposition Equilibrium of LiH and its Contribution on Anode Failure in Practical Lithium Metal Batteries

Gaojie Xu et al.

Summary: This study reveals a negative correlation between the accumulation of LiH and the cyclability of practical LMBs. Additionally, a temperature-sensitive equilibrium governing the formation and decomposition process of LiH at the Li anode is identified, providing important insights for efficient Li protection and the ultimate application of LMBs.

Constructing multifunctional solid electrolyte interface via in-situ polymerization for dendrite-free and low N/P ratio lithium metal batteries

Dan Luo et al.

Summary: A stable multifunctional solid electrolyte interface (SEI) can be constructed by employing electrolyte additives containing catechol and acrylic groups via in-situ anionic polymerization, leading to uniform Li deposition and dendrite-free anode in lithium metal batteries. This strategy offers remarkable cycling performance with high current density, ultra-long cycle life, high cumulative capacity, and stable cycling under high temperature conditions.

Dendrite-Free Li-Metal Anode Enabled by Dendritic Structure

Hongyu Zhang et al.

Summary: The Li-metal anode is stabilized by building dendrite-like Li3Mg7 alloys enriched with Li-containing polymers and using LiH as the Li-ion conductor. This unique structure effectively reduces Li dendrite formation, promotes uniform Li deposition and extraction, and allows for long-term cycling stability with over 900 hours of stable performance. Coupling this anode with LiFePO4 and S cathodes results in superior cycling stability in full cells.

Identification of LiH and nanocrystalline LiF in the solid-electrolyte interphase of lithium metal anodes

Zulipiya Shadike et al.

Summary: A comprehensive understanding of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) composition is crucial for developing high-energy batteries based on lithium metal anodes. This study used synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis to identify and differentiate two elusive components, LiH and LiF, in the SEI of lithium metal anodes. The presence of LiH in the SEI was confirmed, with discussion on the possibility of its misidentification as LiF in the literature. The study also found that LiF in the SEI has different structural features from LiF in the bulk phase, which favor Li+ transport and make it a favored component for the SEI.
